It means that at that point, Ai has learned everything that it can from Humans and has matched our best intelligence (AGi &#8211; Artificial General Intelligence)). The next move is to go beyond the Singularity to a time when computers have progressed so much that they are able to self-learn, innovate, and create technology that&#8217;s entirely new, and foreign, to humans (ASi &#8211; Artificial Super Intelligence).<\/p><p class=\"western\">ASi is when systems start to massively exceed human abilities to even fully understand their working.\u00a0Many commentators believe that the singularity point is well in the future, perhaps 2045 or even maybe not until the next century.<\/p><p class=\"western\">They might be wrong.<\/p><p class=\"western\">Just a short while ago (4<sup>th<\/sup> Jan 2025) Sam Altman, the CEO and one of the original founders of OpenAi, started the year with a tweet that simply read:<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>i always wanted to write a six-word story. here it is: <\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>&#8216;near the singularity; unclear which side.&#8217;<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p>To give some context, in December 2024 OpenAi\u2019s model o3 produced some staggering results in a series of benchmark tests designed to test Artificial General intelligence (AGi). (Credit Wes Roth)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"western\">Clearly that hasn\u2019t happened, and since then several senior people who are directly involved in developing Artificial intelligence are discussing the possibility of ASi being quite close.<\/p><p class=\"western\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #ffff00;\"><b>So, the big question for 2025 is not, \u2018What are the latest gismos for movie making on my PC\u2019, but rather \u2018Where are we on the curve?\u2019<\/b><\/span><\/p><p class=\"western\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19432 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-08-151719.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"323\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-08-151719.jpg 1011w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-08-151719-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-08-151719-768x424.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 323px) 100vw, 323px\" \/>We shouldn&#8217;t expect a big sign to appear when we cross the Singularity, but as Sam so eloquently writes \u2013 it\u2019s hard to know which side of it we are currently on. We do seem to be in the vicinity.<\/p><p class=\"western\">We are all living through a pivotal time in human history. Savour the moment, and watch out for some big developments in 2025!<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20044\" src=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/0uftz6wv.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/0uftz6wv.bmp 780w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/0uftz6wv-300x63.jpg 300w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/0uftz6wv-768x162.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/>No sooner than the proverbial ink had dried on those electronic words, that we received an onslaught of Ai system releases in 2025!<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Chinese company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepseek.com\">Deepseek<\/a> launched a range of market disruptors:<br \/><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">January 10th Deepseek V3 released<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">January 20th Deepseek R1 family released<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">January 28th Deepseek Janus Pro (multi modal model)<\/span><\/p><p>All of these are powerful, fully open source, Ai systems competing with the best of the rest. They were launched with the claim that their training was a fraction of the cost of the main competition. This alarmed investors into thinking that maybe Nvidia and other tech companies didn\u2019t need their massive investments, causing stock prices to drop on 27th January.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-20050 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/alibaba-qwen-ai-model-bgr-1024x509.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"304\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/alibaba-qwen-ai-model-bgr-1024x509.webp 1024w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/alibaba-qwen-ai-model-bgr-300x149.webp 300w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/alibaba-qwen-ai-model-bgr-768x381.webp 768w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/alibaba-qwen-ai-model-bgr-1536x763.webp 1536w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/alibaba-qwen-ai-model-bgr-2048x1017.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/>During this time other Chinese companies such as Baidu, Btye Dance, Tencent, and Alibaba (<a href=\"https:\/\/chat.qwenlm.ai\">Qwen<\/a>) all released their models showing to a surprised Western World that China is a very close rival to the US in Ai.<\/p><p>US companies weren\u2019t slow to respond.\u00a0On 30th January, the <a href=\"https:\/\/allenai.org\">Allen Institute for Ai<\/a> (Ai2) released its <a href=\"https:\/\/allenai.org\/tulu\">Tulu3 405B<\/a> reasoning model. Based in Seatle this little known non-profit institute\u2019s model is also fully open source and matched Deepseek as a comparable reasoning model.<br \/>On 31st January, OpenAi&#8217;s more powerful and recently announced high end reasoning <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/openai-o3-mini\/\">model o3-min<\/a>i was made public.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-test-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20045 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-test-1-1024x941.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-test-1-1024x941.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-test-1-300x276.jpg 300w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-test-1-768x706.jpg 768w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-test-1.jpg 1394w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/a>Then on the 2nd February, Open Ai released <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/introducing-deep-research\/\">Deep Research<\/a>, an Ai agent capable of multi-step research on the internet for complex tasks. Just to cause a bit of confusion, the name is similar to that of Deepseek and is the same as the<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/gemini\/google-gemini-deep-research\/\"> Google&#8217;s Gemini Deep Research<\/a>\u00a0offering from last year. OpenAi\u2019s model is powered by their most powerful model \u2013 o3 (not to be confused with their o3-mini released a few days ago) and places it firmly at the top of the performance charts (for today!).<\/p><p>As per the OpenAi Deep Research release notes:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20046\" src=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-release-1024x409.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-release-1024x409.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-release-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-release-768x307.jpg 768w, https:\/\/surreyborder.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deep-research-release.jpg 1321w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p><p class=\"western\">Many believe that humans last great invention will be AGi, because after that it will be the computers that will do all the inventing. That\u2019s why Ai safety is so critically important, and why we are entering uncharted territory.<\/p><p class=\"western\">\u2019Wow&#8217;! What a start to 2025 in Ai!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6c3894a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6c3894a\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-66976bb\" data-id=\"66976bb\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6c735d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6c735d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Now take a breath while you consider a few things:<\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">When something is free to you, you are probably the product.<\/span> Consider what data is being collected? Where is your data is going? How is it being used? What are your privacy rights?\u00a0 US products connect to US servers, Chinese products connect to Chinese servers.<\/li><li><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"> Deepseek is connected with a investment company that created and used<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/deepseek-ai-model-china-chat-gpt-tech-stocks-what-know-rcna189604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ai stock trading systems<\/em><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">for the marke<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">ts<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">.<\/span> It should have been obvious to anyone with stock market experience the impact Deepseek products would have on stock prices. It\u2019s reasonable to wonder if any of their investors had the good sense to short the technology stocks? Out of interest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/nvidia-short-bets-rake-over-6-billion-profits-after-deepseek-panic-2025-01-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters reported<\/a> that $6.6Bn was made by Nvidia short investors.<\/li><li><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Assuming\u00a0 it&#8217;s true that much less compute was required<\/span> compared to the US models, the lower costs are more likely to drive demand up, rather than down, for products such as Nvidia&#8217;s.
