Film in an Evening 2023
The Film in an Evening 2023
In keeping with current trends, ‘Evening’ has now been redefined to mean ‘Month, or Even Longer”
To avoid confusion, we shall continue to refer to ‘Film in an Evening’ or FIAE, even though they are actually Videos, and not Films.
This years ‘Film in an Evening’ was held in July 2023.
There were 3 entries:
“The Fall and Rise of Mr Punch” by The Oddbods
“The Despair Workshop” by The Weyfarers
“Mrs Symms’ Royal Affair” by the Pioneers
Oddbods 2023 - 'The Fall and Rise of Mr Punch'
The Oddbods in 2023 were Gillian Gatland, Jo Jones, Peter Stratford, Jim Reed, Jack Visser, Dave Skertchly, Ric Swift and Mike Sanders.
The Fall and Rise of Mr Punch by the Oddbods
The Fall and Rise of Mr Punch reflects the change in popularity of the 300 year old British seaside tradition of the Punch and Judy show.
We follow the poignant story of Mr Punch and the Professor, as we capture the changes that occur in their lives as a result of popular opinion and modern day thinking.
Much of the film was shot on location….
Actually, that's not true.
Most of the video was created with the use of Green Screen, and shot inside a club members house.
That saved a massive amount of time travelling to different locations and the cost of hire of premises or purchase of equipment. The saving in fuel alone must mean that the OddBods are well on the way to becoming a 'Carbon Neutral' film group!
The clever script was written by Dave Skertchly, and the rest of the team threw their efforts into providing the human elements, enhancing the creativity, and assisting with the editing and SFX.
Although the recordings were made in only a few hours, it would not have been possible to undertake the editing and VFX in an evening. Indeed there were several days of work in the editing alone.
Once again the OddBods have pushed the boundaries with their original and thought provoking video, and taken full advantage of the recently redefined meaning of the word 'Evening'.

The Making of...'The Fall and Rise of Mr Punch'
The ‘Making off…’ gives an insight into how we utilised green-screen technology for much of the video. Many of the scenes were shot inside a club members house.
That saved a massive amount of time travelling to different locations and the cost of hire of premises or purchase of equipment.
The saving in fuel alone must mean that the OddBods are well on the way to saving the planet!
Pioneers 2023 - Mrs Symms' Royal Affair
The Pioneers in 2023 were Philip Morley, Tim Stannard, Michael Young, David Kershaw and Colin Lewis, with guest actress Debbie Groves playing the part of Mrs Symms.
"Mrs Symms Royal Affair" by the Pioneers
A clever plot showing that the most vulnerable people are capable of beating those who set out to profit from their ultimate demise.
The story opens with streetwise house clearance guys sifting the belongings of an old lady destined to finish her days in a care home.
Happening upon what looks like along lost masterpiece they set about making a huge profit…
However, it is soon apparent that the whole thing is a carefully contrived set up, leaving the little old lady seriously in funds.
There is an interesting and unexpected twist at the end.
Filmed over 3 days with just 4 days to edit, the film posed several technical problems, all expertly overcome by the Team members.
The Making of...Mrs Symms' Royal Affair
“There was no shortage of good fun had by all… A truly Club Film”.
"Making Of...Mrs Symms' Royal Affair" by the Pioneers
The ‘Making of’ … expertly filmed and edited by team member Colin Lewis shows how the complex plot was carefully honed to ensure the final twist was not evident.
It was very much a case of everyone being the Director which made for many takes before the subject matter was acceptable to all. In one scene, just 2 minutes of film took 6 hours to film and many more to edit.
Weyfarers 2023 - 'The Despair Workshop'
"The Despair Workshop" by The Weyfarers
The Weyfarers had three script ideas at their first meeting but a comedy was preferred and The Despair Workshop, based on the BBC’s highly successful programme, The Repair Shop, was born.
It benefited from Deepa Craig having an ideal building in her garden that would make a good location; a large, stylish shed used as an Art Room.
Each of six members had a role with
Tony Goodearl selected as the posh visitor bringing something to repair; Peter Frost forced into the role of Jay Blades on the BBC but ours was Greg Glades, father of Shay Glades. Peter was still writing part of the script when the shoot started and had no chance to learn lines, unfortunately.
Shot over two days mainly on iPhones for visuals and sound with outside temperature reaching 28° and over 30° in the shed, it became rather wilting but we completed all 33 shots, using Deepa’s workshop garage as well for two scenes.
Gordon Sutton as Sid ‘Specs’, the mostly blind watch repairer (and camera 1); John Smith as Dirk Ratchet, the camera ‘expert’ who uses his screeching lathe to make metal bits (also camera 2); Dick Grainger (camera 3) as Will Knott, useless woodworker and Deepa as the Guinness swigging wonky sewing specialist.
Editing was first tackled by Gordon Sutton and the edit and individual shots were handed to Peter Frost when Gordon was on holiday. But the three different file types were not readable by Peter’s main computer, so he had to revert to a 13” Macbook which was not ideal and shunted clips back and forth on a portable drive between two machines.
This part of the editing posed so many problems that it did lead Peter into Despair!
However, the team are all pleased and proud of the resulting comedy which was a lot of fun to make and gave our two newest members a practical insight into amateur video making with a tight timescale.
