Documentary Competition 2023

The annual Documentary Competition was held in September 2023. 

There were 4 entries:

  • Great Cockrow Railway by Peter Frost 15’15”
  • The Outer Hebrides by Peter Stratford 11’45”
  • The Making of Mr Punch by Peter Stratford and Jack Visser 11’05”
  • Whitehaven by Peter Stratford 3’33”
The winner was decided by the SBMM Committee, who agreed that Peter Stratford’s video, ‘The Outer Hebrides’ was outstanding.

'The Making of Mr Punch' by Peter Stratford and Jack Visser

‘The Making of Mr Punch’ documented the four day shoot of the group video, ‘The Rise and Fall of Mr Punch’ made by the Oddbods. Their video was made in the same satirical style as Punch, and the ‘Making of…’ captured the behind the scenes action – both the comedy and drama! 

The raw footage was recorded by Peter on his camera, and edited by Jack Visser. Both Jack and Peter provided the commentary.

Film about Whitehaven’s coal mining past, where the pits closed in 1986 with the loss of 3,500 jobs, to today and its possible re-incarnation as a near neighbour to Britain’s newest deep coal mine, approved in 2022.

Peters film tells the story of the 7 inch gauge railway that that was started in 1946 by John Samuel in Walton-on-Thames and relocated to  Chertsy in the 1960’s, where it was much extended. Today there are two routes each about 1 1/4 miles.
